On February 22nd (Mon.), celebrations for the first full moon of the Lunar New Year will take place at Namsangol Hanok Village. There will be both performances and traditional activities, such as the burning of notes, for people to take part in. The burning of notes is signficant as wishes are written on the notes, then burned so that the wishes may come true.
Vistors can make a wish on a piece of paper, and have the note burned at the end of celebrations. "Make a Wish" will begin at 15:00 and close at 18:00. Advance reservations are not necessary for admission to any of the activities. Nut cracking, ogok-bap (five grain rice) tasting, liquor tasting are some of the traditional Lunar New Year's first full moon activities that will take place.
The first full moon of the New Year has been considered very important since ancient times. The first full moon signified a chance to wish for food luck and to ward off misfortune. Lunar New Year customs pertain to different ways one could bring good luck and ward off bad luck. The making, sharing, and eating of ogok-bap (five grain rice) symbolized taking in good luck. Dried greens and herbs gathered from the previous year are eaten in order to ward off heat exhaustion in the summer. Waking early in the morning and cracking nuts with your teeth is done to ward off boils for the rest of the year. Drinking liquor during the first full moon was thought to make your ears sharper and so receive good news. Other games and activities, such as brush-clearing fires, are also traditional activities.
