Arrival of the Dokkaebi

Because the weather was good,

Because the weather was bad,

Because the weather was good enough,

the Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market opens.

In Seoul, a delightful kind of dokkaebi (goblin) comes by to visit every weekend. Long ago, children were warned by their grandmothers that a dokkaebi would come to kidnap them when they refused to sleep. But this type of dokkaebi is different. It’s much more pleasant.

After a trial run in Yeouido Hangang Park back in 2015, the Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market has been opening annually, attracting over 5 million visitors in 2017 and going on to become one of the greatest, most beloved festival of Seoul.

Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market

Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market started out in the same vein as one of those open-air marketplaces that would pop up temporarily to sell their wares. In fact, to the locals, “dokkaebi market" is a pretty recognizable term. For the longest time, it has been used to describe the local markets within Hwanghak-dong and Banghak-dong. But now, the term itself has taken on a whole new meaning as it goes on to become the name of Seoul’s hottest new cultural spots.

Each of the six markets has their own special theme and unique night views. Along with a new business incubation system in place, they all come together to form night markets that are unique to Seoul. They're not one of those old markets that only sell rice wine, but are a special type of market festival that connects the consumers directly to the merchants, allowing visitors to directly experience and enjoy all the unique products they have to offer.

Here are the 6 Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Markets and what they have to offer.
