Traditional games

Yutnori

A traditional Korean game, usually played on the first day of the Lunar New Year, involves 4 players or teams. The origins of this game remain a little unclear, but it is thought to have been played in Korea for hundreds if not thousands of years. The game is played by throwing four bamboo sticks carved in different shapes and form on the ground. One then moves their game piece around the board according to the way the bamboo sticks land. If the combination for do, or three up and one down, is achieved then the person moves the piece one space. If the combination for gae, two up and two down, is rolled then the player moves two. Geol, one up and three down, results in three moves forward. Yut is when all four sticks are down and results in moving four spaces forward. Mo moves the player the farthest and this occurs when all four sticks are up. Players who throw for a yut or mo may continue to roll as long as they continue to roll one of those two combinations. The players¡¯ pieces, also called mal, are moved around the board. If the mal of one team lands on the space occupied by the mal of another team that team¡¯s mal is sent back to the beginning. If the mal of a team ands on a space already occupied by that team¡¯s mal then those pieces may then move in unison towards the finish line. The team which brings all mal home is the team that wins.
