Bukchon Pilgrimage RouteLearn about historical figures instrumental in shaping the history of the Korean Catholic church, including Heungseon Daewongun, who caused the severe ordeals experienced by the Catholic church, Father James Zhou Wen-mo who was the first foreign priest who opted for martyrdom in Korea, and Kang Wan-suk who hid Father Zhou in her house, while walking around Insa-dong and Bukchon area, the main scenes of their activities.

Site of Gwanghwamun Beatification
Site of Gwanghwamun BeatificationBeatification is a ceremony by the Catholic church honoring martyrs or those who led virtuous lives. Pope Francis held the beatification ceremony for Paul Yun Ji-chung and 123 martyr companions at Gwanghwamun Square on August 16, 2014, and a stone marker was placed there to commemorate the event.
Norakdang Hall at Unhyeongung Palace
Norakdang Hall at Unhyeongung PalaceUnhyeongung Palace was Heungseon Daewongun’s private residence, and Norakdang Hall was the central building there. King Gojong and Empress Myeongseong’s wedding ceremony took place at the hall. It is also where she took her lessons to prepare for becoming a queen after her selection.
Seokjeong Boreum Well
Seokjeong Boreum WellIt is an old well located in Bukchon, and it is called Boreum (15 days) Well because it used to be said that its water was clear for 15 days and murky for the next 15 days. Father James Zhou Wen-mo, the first foreign priest to serve the Korean Catholic church, used the water from this well for baptism.
Gahoe-dong Catholic Church
Gahoe-dong Catholic ChurchGye-dong, which is included in the diocese of Gahoe-dong Catholic Church, is a historic place where Father James Zhou Wen-mo, the first Chinese priest in Korea, held his first mass and where one of the last members of Joseon’s royal family was baptized.
