Seosomun Pilgrimage RouteLearn about the history of the Korean Catholic church, its beginning and persecutions, by visiting Myeongdong Cathedral, the birthplace of the Korean Catholic community; Seoul Cathedral Anglican Church of Korea built in combination of the traditional Korean and Romanesque styles; and Seosomun Martyrs’ Shrine, where numerous early Korean Catholics sacrificed their lives.

※ Visiting Seosomun Historical Park and Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine during construction may be difficult.

Myeongdong Cathedral
Myeongdong CathedralThe beautiful cathedral built in 1898 is the birthplace of the Korean Catholic community. It is the first Gothic style Catholic church in Korea, and also the historic epicenter of the Korean democratization movement that started in the 1960s.
Seoul Cathedral Anglican Church of Korea
Seoul Cathedral Anglican Church of KoreaThe cathedral built in combination of the traditional Korean and Romanesque styles was designated as Tangible Cultural Asset of Seoul No.35 in 1978. In addition to the main building, there are beautiful structures such as the underground church where the remains of Mark Trollope, the third bishop of the Anglican Church of Korea, is buried and Yangijae Hall of Gyeongungung Palace.
Seosomun Historical Park and Catholic Martyrs’ Shrine
Seosomun Historical Park and Catholic Martyrs’ ShrineThe four-way square outside the Seosomun Gate was the site of Chilpae Market, a major market outside the Namdaemun Gate, which used to be packed by people. Designated as a key execution ground to warn people against committing crimes, it is also the site where numerous early Korean Catholics were martyred.
Jungnim-dong Yakhyeon Catholic Church
Although smaller in size than Myeongdong Cathedral, it is the oldest Catholic church in Korea completed in 1892. It was constructed combining Romanesque and Gothic styles, and is one of the few Catholic church buildings designated as a Historical Site of Korea.
