Haneul Park, situated close to World Cup Stadium Station, was established with the aim of restoring Nanjido, a former garbage landfill site. Prior to the 1970s, Nanjido Island was a lovely small island with orchids and gromwells, as its name implied, situated at the point where the Nanji creek river split from the Hangang River and merged back into the main flow near Haengjusanseong Fortress. Nevertheless, Seoul's garbage was dumped on the island until 1993, giving it the reputation of a "garbage island." In 2002, for the 17th FIFA World Cup, the city initiated efforts to clean up the landfill, revive the ecosystem, and established five parks surrounding the World Cup stadium, such as Haneul Park, Noeul Park, and Nanji Hangang Park. Haneul Park is a square park that is arranged with different themed areas such as a silver grass field, grassfield, rock garden, mixed grassland, and sunflower field.
The Silver Grass Festival held in the autumn is another famous event at Haneul Park. The walking paths are adored for their beautiful sunset views and silver grass in the reed beds where you can leisurely walk. Moreover, there are several photo spots like the pink muhly field and the prominent "Bowl of the Sky" sculpture at the heart of the park, as well as the observation deck, ideal for unwinding and savoring the fall ambiance.
To access the park, you can take an electric shuttle from the ground information center (top left) to the summit entrance (wheelchairs can be accommodated in the back of the cart). The wide main entrance and accessible way (top right) are step-free, but certain areas in the park, like the gravel fields, have uneven surfaces, so extra caution is advised when using wheelchairs or strollers. You can rent strollers and wheelchairs at the summit information center, and there is a tactile map available to guide you through the park (bottom left). Halfway through the park (bottom right) is a shelter, along with nearby accessible amenities such as accessible restrooms, accessible parking lots, a nursing station, and diaper changing stations available.

Situated at the foot of Maebongsan Mountain, opposite the northern section of Haneul Park, the Oil Tank Culture Park also has a history of development and restoration. The Mapo Oil Tank Culture Park, once a high-security facility from 1979 to 2000, now serves as a cultural area for the public after an international design contest and citizen idea competition. Five oil tanks have been repurposed into a performance hall, exhibition hall, and multipurpose pavilion (T1~T5), while a newly constructed tank serves as an information exchange center (T5). The previous temporary parking lot has been converted into an outdoor area where citizens can now unwind and participate in community events.(T0).
Examining each facility more closely, the T1 Pavilion serves as a multi-purpose communication area, while the T2 performance hall functions as both an open-air stage (top) and a performance location (bottom). T3 Tank is a historical oil tank that has been maintained in its original state, while T4 Complex Cultural Space offers events that cover a range of topics including environment, culture, and art. T5 Story Museum showcases the evolution of the oil tanks into a cultural park, while T6 Community Center features a creative lab, classrooms, and a cafeteria, and T0 Cultural Yard provides a spacious area for relaxation and community events.
The accessible ways and main entrances with no steps or slopes enable wheelchair users to come in and out easily (top left). Nevertheless, the park's pathways are made from natural terrain, which may restrict mobility for persons in wheelchairs. Information desks are located at a slightly raised level (top right), while wheelchairs, strollers, and audio guides are available for rental for persons with visual impairments (Bottom left). Each facility is equipped with elevators, accessible restrooms, and accessible parking lots (Bottom right).
