Seoul is known for its breathtaking views of soaring skyscrapers, sky-high mountains, and colourful streets, but December reveals some of Seoul’s most enchanting scenes of all. As the holiday season begins, Seoul’s most popular attractions are adorned with glittering light displays, bringing warmth to even the frostiest winter days and nights. Here are some of the most charming winter light displays illuminating the city this December.
There’s no better way to brighten up a cold December night in Seoul than by wandering under the glow of the Luminarie Light Festival at Seokchon Lake Park. Known for its postcard-perfect views of Lotte Tower and spectacular cherry blossoms, this beloved lakeside gem becomes even more magical in winter, as thousands of lights turn the entire lake into a glowing winter fairytale.

As you walk around the lake, you’ll pass through light tunnels and bridges adorned with twinkling lights. There are curated photo zones on each side of the lake, but with the city skyline and the reflection of the lights dancing on the water, every step feels photo-worthy. The lights cast a romantic glow across the lakeside paths, making it a cozy winter date spot, but the festival also attracts friends, families, and even the occasional jogger. Whether you visit alone or with loved ones, the Luminarie Light Festival offers a truly dreamlike experience.

The festival’s theme this year is ‘Love & Dream Forever,’ and it runs until February 28th, 2026. The lights turn on every evening from 5:30pm to 10:30pm, so take a stroll around the lake after nightfall and let the dazzling lights fill your evening with magic.

When winter arrives, one of the most iconic spots in Seoul is transformed into a glittering festive scene. Every December, Starfield Library glows day and night with lights and decorations, as bright ornaments transform the space into a flurry of green, red, and gold. This year’s installation, titled ‘A Page of Christmas Wonder’, feels perfectly at home in the library setting.

Look up to see colorful gifts suspended from the ceiling, and don’t miss the illuminated carousel full of the season’s charm. Alternatively, you can take the escalator up to the second floor and see the whole installation from above. If you’d like to take photos in front of the tree, it’s best to arrive early when the mall opens at 10:30am. I visited at 11:00am and there were already plenty of people enjoying the spectacle.
Stopping by the Starfield Library to see the winter decorations is a wonderful way to get into the Christmas spirit, for book lovers, photography enthusiasts, and anyone who adores the holiday season.
Atelier de Noel, Hyundai Department Store Trade Center Branch
This seasonal installation is one of Seoul’s most popular events in December. While the Yeouido location comes with a competitive ticketing process and long wait times, the Hyundai Department Store Trade Center installation is open to all, with no reservations necessary.

Among the forest of office buildings by Samsung Station, look out for the towering Christmas tree in front of the department store. Then, enter and head straight to the third floor. First, you’ll find yourself at the Letter Workshop, a spellbinding installation where red teddy bears sit before typewriters, with endless lists of names cascading onto the floor. Overhead, letters to Santa are suspended in midair, as if by magic.

On the sixth floor, you’ll find the biggest and most interactive part of the installation, the Gift Workshop. Step inside the full-size winter grotto, where gifts move along a sparkling locomotion set while festive music floats through the air. Stroll around the grotto’s edge to spot the winter animals tucked among the snow.

The seventh floor is where you’ll find the Forest Path, a charming photo spot that looks just like a snow-covered woodland. Take a photo with the animatronic forest creatures, and feel yourself being transported to a true winter wonderland.

The 2025 Seoul Lantern Festival, held at Cheonggyecheon Stream, is set to be one of the season’s brightest and most magical events. Running from December 12th until January 4th everyday from 6:00pm to 10:00pm, this year’s theme is ‘Magical Moments Unfolding in Seoul’s Winter Nights’.

There are four distinct zones, each with its own sparkling story. Some lantern highlights include an aurora experience, scenery from 1900s Seoul, and landmarks from around the city featured in Netflix’s ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters. There are even a few familiar Pokémon faces included in this year’s illuminations. The lanterns, made from traditional Korean paper called hanji, are joined by media art installations, for an artistic blend of tradition with modernity.
At the Uicheon Stream, a separate installation brings back some of the most beloved lantern figures from the 2024 festival. The ‘Royal Procession’ series earned the top spot among the lanterns attendees most wanted to see return this year.

Walking through the lanterns on a winter’s night is a truly magical and vibrant experience, best shared with loved ones. Not only is it a great opportunity to find out more about Seoul’s past and present, it’s also a chance to reflect on the year gone by and look forward to the year ahead.

Gwanghwamun Market returns to Gwanghwamun Square this December for its 4th year, with the theme ‘A Santa Village in a Winter Fairy Tale’. The market, complete with a giant 15m Christmas tree, is open from December 12th to December 31st from 5:30pm to 9:30pm daily, with extended hours until midnight on December 31st.

This bustling Christmas market features over 100 vendor booths selling Christmas handicrafts, goods, and food. More than 10 festive photo zones provide the chance to get the perfect holiday photo, including the Nutcracker’s House accompanied by soft classical music, and the Gingerbread Cookie house with the scent of gingerbread cookies in the air. Once you’ve filled up on Christmas treats and visited the photo zones, there’s a range of free things to do, including the Santa Village Stamp Tour, photo booths for celebrating the season with a four-cut, and even the chance to meet Santa.
Out of all the dazzling spots on this list, Gwanghwamun Market is my personal favourite. I stumbled upon it in 2023 and immediately felt transported to the lively Christmas markets back home in Europe. It truly captures the festive spirit and it’s a must-visit every year during the season.

Seoul can get exceptionally cold as the winter season draws in, but these dazzling lights around the city will fill your visit with warmth, brightness, and magic. Keep this list in mind during your trip to Seoul and make some unforgettable winter memories this December.
