Located in Jongno, Sewoon Arcade is an up-and-coming place frequented by people who want to attend various events or enjoy numerous attractions. The country’s first residential mixed-use complex, the Sewoon Arcade, was built in 1968 and considered the country’s leader in electronic shopping for decades. In the late 1990s, demolition began to be discussed due to the increasingly fewer visitors interested in seeing the area. However, the arcade area has recovered its previous vitality through the municipal government’s urban regeneration project and it now showcases the positive impact of the sweeping regeneration project. Completed in 1968, Sewoon Arcade was the country’s first residential mixed-use complex and the home appliance shopping mall. Its popularity started to decline due to the emergence of the Yongsan Electronics Market combined with residential development occurring in Gangnam and elsewhere. The entire arcade was on the verge of demolition. But, in 2015, the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched an urban regeneration project for the area, which is now recovering its former vitality. The empty space in front of Sewoon Arcade has been developed into Dasi (Again) Sewoon Plaza. The first to fourth floors are occupied by a plethora of electronics stores while the fifth to seventh floors are being used as apartments. Through the urban regeneration project, Sewoon Arcade has been reinvigorated with an increasing number of residents and visitors alike.
In addition to the fun of visiting electronics stores, Sewoon Arcade has prepared some hidden spaces, one of which is Sewoon Rooftop where anyone can loosen up while enjoying drinks at the rooftop café. The rooftop plays host to performances and events, too. You can look down the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jongmyo Shrine from the rooftop.
Sewoon Arcade has twin pedestrian bridges between various buildings in the area. Sewoon Pedestrian Bridge connects Sewoon, Cheonggye and Daelim Arcades in the area so that visitors can move between buildings most conveniently. Overlooking CheonggyecheonStream, Dasi Sewoon Bridge offers a vintage point to enjoy the view of Cheonggyecheon Stream beneath or take a rest on benches installed along the way.
