Stretching from the Ihwa-dong intersection to the Hyehwa-dong rotary in the Jongno-gu District, the vibrant college town of Daehak-ro is Seoul's representative cultural and artistic district. This journey introduces everything from diverse entertainment venues, parks adorned with autumn foliage, and mural villages with something new to discover to a stunning sunset – all waiting to be explored on the vibrant streets of Daehak-ro.
The Romance of
Marronnier Park
This park was formed in the spot where Seoul National University used to be before its campus moved to the Gwanak-gu District. The park’s name comes from the chestnut trees that were once there.
During autumn, the park seems to unravel a golden carpet of fallen leaves where you can find various cultural and artistic facilities, including the iconic Arko Arts Theater and Arko Art Center, designed by architect Kim Swoo-geun, as well as the Artist's House, a performance and theater facility. Live performances by singers and bands, as well as theatrical performances are also presented at the outdoor venues.
Where Theater Lives
The lively, up-close performances of actors on a stage boast a special charm unique to the theater, allowing the audience to capture every small movement and breath. It is no exaggeration to say that Daehak-ro is the mecca of performing arts in Korea as many renowned actors in Korea have their roots in the theater world.
Recently, actor Park Bo-gum, who has gained immense popularity in a number of TV series and movies, also garnered significant attention when he took part in a theatrical production. With numerous theaters and theater companies gathered in Daehak-ro, a wide variety of performances are offered. From romance and comedy to mystery, thriller, and horror, you can choose a performance that suits your taste.

The Home of Creation,
Ihwa Mural Village
Situated between Hyehwa-dong and Dongdaemun, Ihwa-dong is a delightful area encompassing quaint alleyways. The Ihwa Village, which used to be a town of single-story houses densely packed between alleys and stairs, has transformed into the “Ihwa Mural Village” through the “Public Art Project.” Ihwa Mural Village is full of spots for capturing life's moments, including a mural cafe that creates the illusion of stepping into a painting, angel wing mural, and a picturesque mural street that evokes the ambience of a seaside village somewhere far from Seoul.
The Snail Street in this village was also featured in the recent Netflix series, Doona! In addition, there are small bookstores, cafés, workshops, and guesthouses gathered here, offering plenty to see and enjoy.
The Blissful Nightscape at
Naksan Park
The view of Seoul city against the backdrop of a spectacular red sunset seen from the stairs to Naksan Park will certainly set the mood just right.
While the colorful fallen leaves along the Seoul Fortress Trail add to the fall ambiance, Naksan Park is great for enjoying the open view of Seoul during the day, and a wonderful panoramic night view at night. The soft lighting of the fortress trail illuminates the autumn night for a subtle yet heart-fluttering moment to close the romantic night out.
