In 2025, the Hongik University Museum presents the special exhibition After White 1975–1995. This exhibition re-examines the critic Lee Il’s essay White Thinks, which laid the foundations for the aesthetics of Korean monochrome painting (Dansaekhwa), retracing the trajectory of his thought and practice, which deeply influenced the formation and development of Korean contemporary art. From the museum’s collection, visitors will encounter the flow of Korean contemporary art beginning with monochrome painting and the color white, viewed within the context of art criticism. The exhibition provides an opportunity to experience how art and criticism interacted to shape the flow of Korean contemporary art and to newly encounter the influence criticism exerted in Korean art history. It is hoped that this exhibition will re-examine the meaning of criticism within the history of Korean contemporary art and offer an occasion to reflect anew on contemporary art discourse today.
