2025 Seoul City Wall Museum First Half Special Exhibition
World Heritage and Capital Fortifications of Hanyang
The "Capital Fortifications of Hanyang" were built to defend Hanyang, the capital of Joseon. While fortress heritage in many contemporary cities has disappeared due to urban development, Hanyang's capital fortifications have maintained their form to the present day, preserving both tangible and intangible historical value. To promote and conserve these values worldwide, Seoul City, Gyeonggi Province, Goyang City, and the National Heritage Administration are collaborating to inscribe Hanyang's capital fortifications on the World Heritage List.
This exhibition examines the meaning of UNESCO World Heritage, the World Heritage Convention and its operating bodies, the World Heritage inscription process, and the international value of Hanyang's capital fortifications, aiming to explore how Hanyang's capital fortifications are progressing from being solely Korea's heritage to becoming heritage for the entire world.
