《Yoo Youngkuk: A Mountain Within Me》 is the largest retrospective to date commemorating the 110th anniversary of the birth of Yoo Youngkuk (1916–2002), a pioneer of Korean abstract art, and the inaugural project of the newly presented 'Korean Modern Masters Exhibition' series by the Seoul Museum of Art. This exhibition comprehensively illuminates his 60-year artistic career, from his early abstract experiments in Tokyo in 1935 to his later introspective abstraction, through over 170 works, including previously unreleased paintings, reliefs, photographs, drawings, and archival materials. Penetrating the turbulence of the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, and the era of rapid economic growth, his paintings, which practiced abstraction, the avant-garde of his time, in both life and art, speak to us once again with profound resonance from today's perspective, questioning the very essence of creation.
