Celebrate Chuseok Like a Seoulite!

Chuseok is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea. Chuseok takes place annually in the fall, and spending time in Korea during Chuseok can be a unique experience. Traditionally, families observe Chuseok by gathering together to eat and spend time with each other. These gatherings include extended family members and can often become huge feasts as even far-flung family members would come together for the holiday. Chuseok is a family-focused holiday and there is an abundance of food as families express their love through food and cooking. However, these days, you don't have to be Korean or with your family to enjoy traditional Chuseok activities. Even if you're visiting Seoul on your own, it's possible to get a feel for Korean traditions and experience Korean culture. Locations throughout Seoul will be holding many Chuseok activities and events.

Chuseok Cultural Events

추석행사

This year, Chuseok falls on September 15th (which is August 15th by the lunar calendar), and Chuseok festivities will take place from Sept. 14th through Sept. 18th. During the Chuseok holiday period, museums, palaces, and Namsangol Hanok Village will hold a variety of cultural events. There will be traditional Korean performances at the National Museum of Korea, as well as thrilling percussion performances. Visitors will really be able to feel the music. The National Folk Museum of Korea will offer traditional craft making activities with hanji paper, and will have food tasting. Sample traditional foods like songpyeon (half-moon rice cake) and sikhye (sweet rice punch). There will also be traditional Korean games for visitors to participate in. Try your hand at games like spinning tops and tuho (throwing sticks into a cannister). The Seoul Museum of History will be putting on a family-friendly puppet show, hosting traditional games and cultural activities. The museum will also have traditional foods to sample.

The major tourist attraction Namsan Seoul Tower can be seen from Namsangol Hanok Village. While Namsan Seoul Tower is ultra modern, Namsangol Hanok Village is decidedly traditional. Make your own songpyeon, learn about charye (ancestral memorial services), play folk games, take part in an arm wrestling match, and watch a ganggangsullae (circle dance) performance. Deoksugung Palace is famous for its Changing of the Guard ceremony and there will be Chuseok festivities to enjoy as well. The theme of this year's activities is "Chuseok Appreciation" and there will be activities and performances for people of all ages to enjoy. The opening ceremony will feature tradtional Korean music and traditional Korean dance. The celebrations will be a treat for both the eyes and ears.

Tteok Café

특별한 추억으로 남을 공간 이태원에서 다양한 맛집

Tteok (rice cake) is a much beloved part of Korean cuisine. Made with rice, tteok can be eaten as a snack, but it’s filling enough to be a meal replacement. Though long a mainstay of Korean cuisine, in recent years, novel tteok cafés have started to pop up in Seoul. Many of these charming cafés offer tteok that is decorated and shaped in creative and playful ways. Instead of traditional rectangular or half-moon shapes, tteok at these cafés often resemble Western cakes and cupcakes. Hongdae is well known as a bustling and trendy area in Seoul. Thanks to the many college students who congregate here, the atmosphere is youthful and hip. One particularly well known modern tteok café, Tteoki Joa is located in Hongdae. The brownie with whipped cream is made with glutinous rice flour, which makes for an extra-chewy treat. The mini tteok balls are a more traditional tteok dish, and they're flavored with citron or honey. The red bean smoothie is also a must try drink from Tteoki Joa. It's smooth, flavorful, and pairs well with all of the desserts and tteok on offer.

There are also tteok cafés that have more traditional tteok and hew to a traditional aesthetic. Insa-dong is known as a traditional Korean cultural mecca and accordingly, there is a well-established tteok café in the area that offers traditional fare. The tteok at Jilsiru is beautifully presented and come in a variety of flavors. There are fruit flavored tteok as well as tteok with fruit or nut fillings. Patrons can also purchase gift sets that offer a variety of tteok. Gift sets are very popular in Korea, in the way that gift baskets are often given as gifts in North America.

Songpyeon: Chuseok's Representative Food
Songpyeon (half-moon rice cake) is made and eaten in large numbers during Chuseok. Even today, many families make songpyeon by hand for Chuseok. There is a Korean saying that one must make beautiful songpyeon in order to give birth to a beautiful daughter. Though many families make songpyeon by hand for Chuseok, many families purchase their songpyeon from tteok shops. Songpyeon is traditionally served on top of pine needles. Put the dish as pine needles and enjoy the pine fragrance. Stop by any tteok shop that's open during Chuseok to buy and taste songpyeon for yourself.
