Culture Station Seoul 284 is a dynamic and open complex cultural space. After serving as the main stage of Korea’s modern and contemporary history as well as its hub for transportation and exchange, the Seoul Station building has been restored to its original form to be used as a place where various genres of culture and arts are created and displayed for the public. It currently features various exhibitions, performances and workshops regularly. Renowned for its exotic architectural style, the former Seoul Station building served as the gateway to Seoul in transportation and exchange for eight decades. It was left abandoned for quite a while as a new station building was completed nearby. As part of the municipal government’s urban regeneration initiative, the building went through a two-year restoration process to recover its value as a cultural heritage and serve as abreathing cultural space. Should you find time at Seoul Station, be sure to take a free tour of the historical space, which is offered every day except on Mondays.
Faithfully preserving the traces of its years, Culture Station Seoul 284 boasts exotic interiors as beautiful as its exteriors. Most notably, the stained glass on the ceiling symbolizes Ganggangsullae (an ancient Koreangroup dance) around the Taegeuk pattern at the center. It creates a magnificent scene when sunlight shines through it. Be sure to pay a visit to exhibition halls, including the restoration project exhibition hall, which, features historical items discovered during the restoration process. Try taking pictures against the backdrop of historical architecture topped by colorful wallpapers and marble!
In addition to its restored architectural beauty, Culture Station Seoul 284 features a variety of arts and culture programs as a complex cultural space. It has eight and six exhibition spaces on the first and second floorsrespectively. The RTO (Railroad Transportation Office) Performance Hall on the right side of the building adds to your pleasure.
