한지와 한글의 만남
In 2017, the Louvre Museum in France used hanji instead of the originally used Japanese washi to restore the damaged part of the lock on the desk of Maximilian II of Bavaria. ICPAL of Italy also chose hanji to restore Leonardo da Vinci’s notes and Saint Francis’ personal prayer book. As it holds, the durability and flexibility of hanji has been globally recognized and is used to restore material cultural heritage around the world.
The Great Dharani Sutra that has been passed down for more than 1,200 years is proof of the hanji’s durability, and it lives up to its status as "hanji of a thousand years." Hanji, with its strong and sturdy characteristics, has flexible places of use, including floor oilpaper or wallpaper, window paper on lattice doors, layers on armor that protect against swords and arrows, or even clothes for the dead. Hanji is a special paper that is handled ninety-nine times by artisans and is not complete until it is handled for the hundredth time by the last artisan, and is therefore also referred to as baekji, or "hundred paper." Here are some places where you can explore the world of hanji and its legacy, along with the beauty of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, during your travels in Seoul. Meeting nationwide hanji in one location
Hanji Culture and Industry Center
The Hanji Culture and Industry Center, which opened in July of 2020, is a center that was founded to introduce the excellence of traditional hanji and to promote its use. At the center, visitors can appreciate goods from twenty hanji workshops spread nationwide while simultaneously experiencing the history and present state of hanji.
The first floor is a space for the showroom and a display of over 200 different color samples of Hanji, which catch the eyes of visitors. The large Hanji Table in the center of the room is a storage space for 400 types of hanji organized by region, use, and type. Visitors can personally appreciate various hanji papers, such as the uniquely textured jumchiji (also spelled joomchiji) and the colorful nayeomji as well as multaeji and kkotjandiji, and stamp seals made through the visualizations of each hanji workshop’s features. The first lower floor is an archive for people within the hanji-related fields, as it is an archive for those who wish to study hanji in depth.
The Hanji Culture and Industry Center is a comfortable space that is open to all, just like the simple and flexible hanji. A representative of the center says, “Even international visitors marvel at the traditional paper (hanji) that represents Korea and its warm touch that cannot be found on other types of paper.”

Hanji meets Hangeul calligraphy
Harangbang Calligraphy Design Studio
Hanji, which has outstanding preservation power, finely soaks in ink on its glossy white paper. For this reason, it was commonly used for paintings and works of calligraphy. At the Harangbang Calligraphy Design Studio located near Hongik Univ. Station in Seoul, visitors can get hands-on experience of Korean calligraphy on hanji. As a place that continuously held classes for non-Koreans at the Seoul National University Language Education Institute, and several training programs for large companies, classes at the studio begin with an introduction to the history and excellence of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. Hangeul is the only writing system with definitive provenance—from creator and origins to fundamentals—and the square shapes of each character have fine formative characteristics that can be artistically modified.
The class teaches participants simple theory, line drawing, and writing of Hangeul characters to allow them to become familiar with the brush and paper, and then participants write the phrases they practiced on fans made with traditional hanji. Calligraphy work of Hangeul on hanji is completed after adding colors that suit the heartwarming messages written to family members and loved ones. The Hangeul hanji fan that takes around two hours to make is a valuable souvenir worth keeping from one’s visit to Seoul.

Read before Reservation
- Reservation shall be made at least 3 days before the tour day.
- Reservation for the next month is available after 15th of the previous month.
- Reservation may be closed early during weekend, holiday, and peak season in spring and fall.
- Seoul Guided Walking Tour Office and Seoul culture and tourism guide are not liable for the safety accidents during the Seoul Guided Walking Tour.
- Reservation for unaccompanied tourist under 14 will be canceled on site.
- All reservations are canceled when Seoul Guided Walking Tour is unavailable due to Particulate Matter Reduction Measure or other weather conditions (heat wave, typhoon, heavy rain). (As of the date before the tour day)
