Gastro Tour Seoul
Get to know Korea through its delicious, healthy cuisine:
Gastronomy tours
In some ways, food is the most important aspect of a trip. Food brings us joy at least three to four times each day and provides the energy to continue our journey. Food is surely important for all travelers, but for travelers with exquisite palates who love to try the newest, finest foods, Gastro Tour Seoul can feed that appetite.
Since its establishment in 2014, Gastro Tour Seoul, a food and tour company that introduces Korean food and food culture to the world through tasting tours, has been working with various experts, chefs, and restaurants, and last year launched the Seoullo 7017 Tasting Seoul Tour that captured the public’s attention. Developing and operating a range of tasting tour programs that explore diverse foods and traditional liquors of Korea, Gastro Tour Seoul also provides programs customized to personal tastes, which are open to anyone who’s ready to try out a world of new flavors.
What Makes Gastro Tour Seoul Special
A tour of Seoul’s food, history, and culture
The representative tasting tour program by Gastro Tour Seoul is the Seoullo 7017 Tasting Seoul Tour launched last year, which consists of three courses: Namdaemun & Myeong-dong, Jungnim-dong, or City Hall & Gwanghwamun. The Namdaemun & Myeong-dong course explores the Namdaemun Market and Myeong-dong area, where you can taste kalguksu noodles, fish, Korean table d’hote, street food, Korean-style Chinese food, and desserts made from local ingredients. The Jungnim-dong course visits restaurants with a long history as well as up-and-coming hot spots. The City Hall & Gwanghwamun course stops by restaurants in the downtown area near the old City Hall, Deoksugung Palace, and the Pimatgol backstreets, the representative food alleys of old Seoul. Each tour is accompanied by a food culture expert, packed with culinary tales related to history and culture.
From Seoul to Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do
Although the Seoul program is Gastro Tour Seoul’s main operation, there are also tours around Gyeonggi-do and Chungcheong-do. Suwon’s food culture has as long a history as Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site: a tour through Jidong Market, “the food heaven” that has everything imaginable, the “chicken street” lined with nearly 20 chicken restaurants, and Suwon’s symbol, a wanggalbi (beef ribs) restaurant will give tourists a full taste of the region. Through the tour around Taean and Seosan of Chungcheongbuk-do, known as the most gastronomic region in Korea among foodies, tourists will get a taste of their “well-being” food made with jayeom, a rare traditional Korean salt made from sea water. From fresh seafood to vegetables and rice, food made with the best seasonal ingredients bestowed by nature awaits.
Meeting a traditional liquor master
Soju and makgeolli are by far the alcohols with the longest history in Korea, but it’s not easy to find a master brewer who still uses traditional methods. With Gastro Tour Seoul, tourists can meet a master who’s poured his heart and soul into traditional liquor making and take a moment to really appreciate the drinks he’s made. Along with traditional soju, a designated intangible cultural asset of Seoul, tourists can taste gayangju, known to be served only to important guests, with complementing appetizers that used to be served with the drinks at old taverns. This special experience will allow tourists to eat, drink, and make merry.
More Fun Features of Gastro Tour Seoul
Hongik University, a part of Seoul that never, ever sleeps
Seoul is often referred to as the city that never sleeps, and there is a food tour to confirm that reputation, beginning in the evening and stretching late into the night. Most of Gastro Tour Seoul’s tasting tours take place in the morning and the afternoon, but the youthful streets of Hongdae, the area surrounding Hongik University, are better suited for an evening program with drinks. Through the Yeonnam-dong and Sangsu-dong neighborhoods near the university, tourists get to visit five restaurants and bars in three hours to taste makgeolli, craft beer, wine, dessert, and a variety of dishes. This tour is highly recommended for young people who want to make international friends over delicious meals.
