Hello
I'm Seoul's cultural tourism interpreter Lee Hye-kyeong,
in charge of the guide through Bukchon Hanok Village course today
Today's course starts at Unhyeongung Palace
and passes by Bukchon Traditional Culture Center
and the Seokjeong Boreum Well,
as well as Gahoedong Catholic Church
and Baek Inje's House to wrap up the tour
I'll also be introducing Mi-yeon, who applied for today's
Guided Walking Tour and came all the way from Hong Kong
to join us on our Bukchon Hanok Village tour
- Welcome, nice to meet you
- Hello, nice to meet you
Hello, I'm Mi-yeon and I came to Korea from Hong Kong
to study overseas
- Hello
- Yes, nice to meet you
It's very fascinating to have come to Bukchon Hanok Village
and I think it'll be very fun to learn about the Korean culture
Bukchon is one of the most famous tourist attractions where people can sense
both Seoul's past and present
That's why it's one of the most frequently requested courses
by foreigners when they come to Korea
I'm very curious of what Bukchon Hanok Village is like
You are, aren't you?
Alright then, now
we'll start by looking around Unhyeongung Palace, the starting point of today's course
Alright, shall we go?
(Unhyeongung Palace)
This is the first visiting area of the course, Unhyeongung Palace
I've heard a lot about Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace,
but it's a first hearing Unhyeongung Palace
That may be because this wasn't the palace where a king lived
It was the home of Heungseon Daewongun of the royal blood
As the young Heungseon Daewongun's son became king,
the palace got its name Unhyeongung Palace
Then, let's take a look at the beauty of the elite's
traditional Hanok home of Heungseon Daewongun,
who acted as a regent for 10 years and enjoyed a lot of power
This is Unhyeongung Palace's Sarangchae*, called Noandang
*A guest room
"Noan" derived from "NojaAnji" of
It means living the rest of your life in peace at an old age
The words of this signboard were by Joseon's best calligrapher,
Chusa Gim Jeong-hui
(Pyeonaek : A frame hung in the mid-upper section of a gatehouse or building)
It's a Pyeonaek made by piecing his words together one by one
Plus, this place is where
Heungseon Daewongun substantially used it as a politics space,
acting as a regent for 10 years
At that time, this was the center stage for Joseon's politics
Now, shall we go to Anchae* Norakdang?
*Main building of a house
This is Norakdang, the Anchae of Unhyeongung Palace
It's the center building inside Unhyeongung Palace
When Emperor Gojong was 15 years old,
(Garye: King's wedding ceremony(ritual))
this is where he had his Garye with Empress Myeongseong
Whenever Heungseon Daewongun chose a talented being,
he made them pass by this inner gate no matter what
So the people back then called Norakdang's inner gate
the gateway to the government post
Alright then, shall we head to Unhyeongung Palace's last stop, the Irodang?
This place is another one of Unhyeongung Palace's Anchae, the Irodang
After Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong had their Garye in Norakdang,
Norakdang was used as a royal villa
and it no longer served purpose as an Anchae
So in 1869, for Budaebuin Min,
this Anchae was newly built
Irodang's "Iro" means two elders
It also means Heungseon Daewongun and Budaebuin Min
Plus, this Irodang's structure is quite unique
It shows a formation of a square-shaped flat surface
With that, Mi-yeon and I are done looking around Unhyeongung Palace
Now, let's head to Bukchon Culture Center,
to officially start our Hanok Village tour
(Bukchon Traditional Culture Center)
This is Bukchon Traditional Culture Center
where the Bukchon Hanok Village Tour officially starts
This house was built in 1921
and is currently a Registered Cultural Property no.229
Part of Seoul's Bukchon Hanok Village Decoration Project,
this house was bought and was restored back to its original state as best as possible
So we're opening this to tourists who come to Bukchon
Ma'am, what kind of place is this?
This place holds various programs where you can experience Hanok,
and you can hear lectures of traditional culture activities like knotting and calligraphy
Plus, this is being used as a promotion exhibition hall
for Hanok Village and as a Sarangchae for residents
So, shall we head to the next location?
(Seokjeong Boreum Well)
As we walk up along the Gyedong-gil, there's a well here
This well is Seokjeong Boreum Well
This well has clear water for 15 days (boreum)
and has cloudy water for 15 days,
which is why it got the name Seokjeong Boreum Well
There's a sad story behind this name that is being passed down
There was a man and a woman who were in love regardless of social status in Joseon
The man's family were against this relationship,
so he threw himself into this well
and after 15 days, the woman followed after
Then, the water in the well overflowed and never stopped flowing
Only after the people of this village honored their revengeful spirits
did the water stop overflowing
- There was a sad story to this well
- Yes, that's right
But there's another story behind this well
It's related to the history of Catholicism in Korea
The first-ever foreign Catholic father that came to Korea
Chinese father Ju Mun-mo
dedicated Mass with this water and baptized people with it
So this became Korea Catholicism's first-ever holy water
I can't believe a well holds this much history
I think I learned a lot while being with you
Yes, that's right
Let's head to the next location
(Gahoedong Catholic Church)
(Gahoedong Catholic Church is a recommended place, separate from the actual course)
This is Gahoedong Catholic Church
The first-ever foreign Catholic father to enter Korea, Ju Mun-mo,
held Korea Catholic Church's first-ever
dedicated Mass here and officiated the Sacrament of Baptism in Easter of 1795
In the exhibition room of the 1st floor,
regarding the Catholic Persecution of 1801,
there's Hwang Sa-yeong's
and Gihae Persecution of 1839's record
called by Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert is exhibited there
Furthermore, there are precious records of Korea's Catholicism exhibited there as well
The current building was newly built in 2014, after demolishing the worn out and old
Gahoedong Catholic Church
Western-style structures are mixed with traditional Hanok structures
to create that beautiful harmony
Then shall we move onto the next location?
(Bukchon-ro 11-gil, 12-gil)
The way from Gahoedong Catholic Church to Baek Inje's House
is connected by Bukchon-ro 11-gil, 12-gil
(This is where Bukchon Hanok Village residents live)
This place has Hanok lined up beautifully on both sides,
(Please be aware of noise when visiting)
so you can view beautiful Hanok when you visit here
(Baek Inje's House)
Alright, we're in the last location of the course, Baek Inje's House
What kind of place is Baek Inje's House?
This place is deeply related to two people
The first person is Han Sang-nyong, the nephew of Lee Wan-yong
He was the wealthiest individual during that time, so when this house was being built,
they used black pine from the Amnokgang(river) region to build it
The second person is professor Baek In-je, who was the founder of Paik Hospital
He was known as Korea's best surgeon
His wife Choi Kyeong-jin assumed this house in 1944
and it's being preserved well until today
That's why the name of this house is registered as the Baek Inje's House
Alright then, shall we take a look inside?
But this house is structured like that of a Japanese house
Yes, that's right. This house that Han Sang-nyong built
includes Western-style and Japanese-style structures
So at that time, this house was the most luxurious house ever
Today, we did a tour around Bukchon Hanok Village
that has 100 years of history, starting from
Unhyeongung Palace to Baek Inje's house
How was it, Mi-yeon?
After coming to Bukchon Hanok Village,
I was able to learn so many new things
about Korean culture and history with you, so it was very fun
It was very fun for me too
I hope a lot of foreign tourists like Mi-yeon
come visit Bukchon Village a lot
