Romance in Deoksugung Palace of the Korean Empire
A course to explore the modern history of King Gojong, focusing on the love story of Queen Myeongseong and Princess Deokhye. Explore what kind of life King Gojong was living in such a serene palace amidst a time of great change and turbulence.
Originally, Deoksugung Palace’s main gate was the Inhwamun Gate on the Southern side. Then, the eastern side of Gyeongun Palace became the new center after construction of Hwangudan Altar. As a result, Daeanmun Gate on the eastern side became the main gate. The gate’s name changed to Daehanmun Gate in 1906 and it was located on the present place after expansion of Taepyeong-ro in 1970.
Junghwamun Gate is the main gate of Junghwajeon Hall constructed in 1902. The gate was built again after getting burnt down due to a great fire in 1904. Junghwamun Gate originally had Haenggak on left and right side. However, they disappeared and Haenggak remain partially on the eastern side.
Seokeodang is the only mid-rise wooden building in Deoksugung Palace. It is assumed that King Seonjo stayed in Seokeodang after escaping to Uiju and returning during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and passed away on February 1608. Also, Seokeodang was the place where King Gwanghaegun confined empress Inmok and the place where King Gwanghaegun was reprimanded for his misdeed after Injo Restoration.
Deokhongjeon is a royal palace built in 1906 to welcome general honored guests when Hammyeongjeon was used as the bedroom of King Gojong. Deokhongjeon was remodeled in 1911 and it is said that Deokhongjeon was used as a reception room where the king met foreign envoys.
Hamnyeongjeon is a living space (bedroom) where King Gojong stayed. It was built in 1997 and it burnt down during the repair works in 1904. Currently remaining building was rebuilt on December 1904. Hamnyeongjeon is also a place where King Gojong passed away on January 21, 1919 after abdicating the throne to King Sunjong.
Jeonggwanheon is a place where portraits of kings in Joseon Dynasty were enshrined and it is estimated to be built in 1900. The building combines eastern and western styles. The roof is gambrel roof for eastern style and the building’s awning and railing are decorated in western style.
