'Ordinary Lie’ and ‘End of the World and Missed Calls’ and ‘Winter Zoo’ at Seokpajeong - Seoul Museum_1
Seoul Museum’s special exhibition in the latter half of 2019 titled <Ordinary Lie> focuses on ‘lies’, to be more precise, ‘the act of lying’. How do ‘lies’ that have existed since the beginning of mankind affect ‘relationships’ beyond simple lies toward ‘me’? Furthermore, how much of things that we have known as ‘truth’ are actually ‘lies’? The exhibition in Seokpajeong - Seoul Museum, explores these topics prepared by 23 artists. Something that everyone knows about, but does not think too deep about. Something that has become so frequent and prevalent one day: 'lies'. We hope the exhibition themed on lies, <Ordinary Lie> presents a meaningful experience to the audience through new artistic exposure and various thought-stimulating subjects.
Seokpajeong, which is located at the center of Seoul in Buam-dong, is representing Seoul Museum ensconced in the beautiful surrounding landscape.
As a historic site established in the late Joseon dynasty, Seokpajeong is protected as Seoul Tangible Cultural Property No. 26. Seokpajoeng, which used to be used as Heungseon Daewongun Lee Ha-eung’s hermitage garden, boasts a stunning view and outstanding architectural design that sheds a light into the ancestors’ taste for the arts.
In addition to the exhibition <Ordinary Lie>, Seoul Museum is currently also hosting the exhibition <End of the World and Missed Calls> and the special exhibition <Winter Zoo> in the annex building.
The exhibition <End of the World and Missed Calls @ Seoul Museum> is a private exhibition by the artist Seol Eun-a. Through the medium of analogue telephone, the exhibition is offering an interesting opportunity for the audience to utter ‘words (utterances) that were never spoken.’
In particular, this project that is being held in Seoul Museum shares the concept of ‘echo’ that was used in the series of the artist’s early works in the order of <Wanee & Junah>, <The Uninvited> and <The Scarlet Letter>. In the exhibition, you can also see how ‘the words that were never spoken’ go beyond the online space, and continue in the offline space.
"There is a zoo inside an art gallery?"
In the special exhibition 《Winter Zoo》 at Seoul Museum, you will be able to see animals, not in a zoo, but in an art gallery that shares similar bonds with a zoo. You will be able to think about a ‘zoo’ which has now become a forgotten memory, in a range of ways. From art works that deal with endangered species to art works that introduce various animals that you now have forgotten how to call. Animals that you meet at the art gallery would allow you to briefly reunite with ‘me’ in the 'innocent’ period through beautiful memories of the past.
