Monet to Cezanne: An exhibition of masterpieces from impressionists and post-impressionists of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem

Rather than featuring the collected artworks of Europe-based galleries that have been accessible in Korea, the Monet to Cezanne exhibition distinguishes itself with its carefully-selected curation from the globally-renowned Israel Museum, located in Jerusalem. From a non-European viewpoint, their collection offers some insight into the kind of impact of impressionist artwork and artists, a movement centered in France during the late 19th century, had on modern art.

Culture & I Leaders had initially held the exhibition this past January 17, however, they decided to reopen the exhibition for those that missed out on the January opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition is set to run from June 20 to August 30 at the Hangaram Art Museum on the second floor of the Seoul Arts Center. There are a total of 106 pieces of artwork set to be on display, all of which were carefully hand-selected from the globally-renowned Israel Museum's collection, located in Jerusalem.

With the rise of the plein-air, or open-air, painting trend among the Barbizon school of painters, the exhibition aims to explore the genre from the birth and maturing of the impressionist movement up through the post-impressionist era through five distinct themes - waterscape and reflections, nature and landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and still life. In particular, among Water Lilies: Green Reflections, a renowned collective artwork of one of the founders of impressionism, Claude Monet, the piece titled, Pond with Water Lilies [1907], will be featured for the first time domestically, alongside other formative artworks of other impressionist and post-impressionist artists, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, and Paul Cezanne.
