In Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, the site of the old Dankook University campus and Soon Chun Hyang University Hospital are located in close proximity to each other. Not far from Dankook and Soon Chun Hyang, the old Hangangjin Dock used to operate on the Han River. Hangangjin Dock was an important location that served as a logistical and military strategic link with Sapyeong Dock in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu. During the Joseon Dynasty, Hangangjin was important to Seoul’s military defenses due in part to its strategic location at the Han River’s midway point. The royal guard also had a military installation here. Hangangjin’s military importance is even reflected in its name. In Korean, roughly translated, means strategic point of the Han River. The upper reaches of the Han River were protected by Songpajin; the lower reaches were protected by Yeonghwajing, and Hangangjin’s location midway along the river buttressed these defense points. Today, Hangangjin Station sits next to Itaewon; past Itaewon you will find Noksapyeong Station. Among the many tourist attractions in this triangle, this article will spotlight some of the most walkable sites in the Hangangjin area.

When looking at the Itaewon-Hangangjin-Noksapyeong Valley areas, Hangangjin is the most laid-back and peaceful of the three. Hangangjin Station is located on Itaewon-ro, and when walking down this street, one might notice that area is quite different compared with your average Seoul cityscapes. Many of the buildings along the street are very modern and unique. Comme des Garçons’ Seoul flagship store is located along this road and the area has seen a renaissance since the store’s establishment. The stretch of road by the store is also known by its nickname, Comme des Garçons Street. Also in the vicinity is Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art. Just behind the museum is an upscale residential area. Part-way up Mount Namsan, the Grand Hyatt Hotel is not far from Namsan’s well kept park and gardens. Comme des Garçons Street’s quirky buildings and Hangangjin’s relaxed atmosphere will pull visitors back again and again.

Comme des Garçons Street is especially pretty in the fall when the foliage begins to change colors. The Hyundai Card Music Library (Korean: http://library.hyundaicard.com/music ) is operated by the Hyundai Card Library. The music library opened its doors on May 22nd, 2015 and houses over 10,000 vinyl records that visitors can listen to. Some incredibly rare records are held in this collection, and there are also over 3,000 books relating to music. The building’s elegant and airy design is a delight to the eye.

Follow the trail in order to see the Namsan Outdoor Botanical Garden, Namsan Park, and the Wildflower Park. Additionally, there are relatively new deck footpaths that were installed not far from the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. Walking the deck paths will lead you to the Yongsan International School of Seoul. From the school, exit 1 of Hangangjin Station is just a short walk away.
