October - More festivals, more fun!
In the pleasant transition of seasons, the fall is treating us well, with its warm sun and cool breeze. It’s the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities around Seoul, and greet October with open arms! Let’s take a closer look at the colorful festivals held this month, and create memorable moments together.
Seoul International Fireworks Festival
Every year, in big numbers, people come out to watch the highly anticipated, Seoul International Fireworks Festival, light up the night sky. On October 8 th , join us for the full showcase and enjoy the fresh fall air, as well as the fireworks show.
If you are keen on starting the festivities early, the opening exhibition will take place on Friday evening (October 7 th ), starting at 7pm. The following day, on October 8 th , the activities will last the whole day, starting at 1pm with the ‘Fireworks Village’. The Japanese team will exhibit their ability to manipulate and play with colors, while Spain will demonstrate their dynamic performance to the beat of lively music. Of course, Korea will also be putting on quite the show as well! Enjoy these three countries internationally acclaimed fireworks showcase, centered on a theme of ‘Magic’.
Every year, more than 1 million people come out to see the fireworks, so we ask that you take your precautions, and check the schedule in advance, in order to make the most of this wonderful festival.
Tip
Traveling by subway is recommended due to traffic control and congestion. For the festival dates, buses will not stop at the stations closest to the event. Also, illegal parking enforcement will be strictly maintained, and the parking lot at the Han River Park will be completely closed.
Nearby Subway Stations: - Line 5: Yeouinaru Station – Exit 3 (walk 240m) - Line 5: Line 9: Yeouido Station – Exit 5 (walk 1.3km) - Line 9: Saetgang Station – Exit 3 (walk 1.5km) - Line 1: Daebang Station – Exit 6 (walk 2km)
*Yeouinaru Station will be closed for one hour upon completion of the fireworks show. You can always stick around for the After Party, instead of waiting at the metro! *Taxis to Yeouinaru Station are only available after the traffic control is completely finished. Please use them after 10 p.m. to avoid congestion.
From October 6 th to October 9 th , 2016, the Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival will revive and celebrate the spirit of the ancient capital.
If you haven’t already seen the countless dramas or movies set during this time period, a musical will help you learn more about the story of this past kingdom, and what it was like in its prime. There will be a Baekje Village, in which you can experience daily life, as people would have in Songpa, thousands of years ago. Feel free to poke around the traditional marketplace and food festival, too!
Traditional games, folk performances, Songpa Sandae Nori (traditional Korean mask dance) and the Hanseong Baekje Youth Music club are sure to keep you intrigued and entertained. Not to mention, there will be an opening and closing ceremony, with a fireworks showcase during the latter.

Olympic Park Sharing land with historical remnants from the Baekje Era, the Olympic Park is an impressive space at which the 1988 Korean Olympics was held, and the where residents continue to visit to relax, excercise and enjoy the outdoors.
Mongchontoseong Fortress During the festival, there will be free tours available of the Mongchontoseong Fortress. Featuring a beautiful landscape with natural ponds and plenty of greenery, this fortress from 3-4 centuries ago remains a sight to see.
Seoul Baekje Museum For those who wish to learn more about the Hanseong Baekje period, and the former three kingdoms in which Korea was divided into, this museum will give you a better understanding of Korean history.
Itaewon Global Village Festival
From October 15 th to 16 th , all of the different cultural communities living in Korea will gather to celebrate Itaewon’s Global Village Festival.
Coming together for the largest annual culture exchange, discover and learn about other cultures in a fun and interactive way. You'll almost feel like you're on vacation! An annual highlight of the festival is the parade and fashion show, showcasing the culture and traditional clothing of each country.
Lining the streets, tents will be representing different countries from around the world, each of which selling their own snacks and delicacies.There will be many musical performances as well, ranging from DJ sets to traditional folk performances. .

Between the Namsan Park and the Han River, you'll find Itaewon, an area full of culture, nightlife and hidden gems. A long time favorite of the U.S armies stationed in Korea, Itaewon quickly became home to many expats and visitors from abroad. If you are in the area for the Global Village Festival, we highly recommend checking out the following:
Korea’s most famous folk song, Arirang, has approximately 60 different versions, of which there are over 3,200 variations. The Seoul Arirang Festival is annually held to commemorate the song being deemed an Intagible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2012. Held from October 14 th to 16 th , join us at the Gwanghwamun Plaza for an incredible celebration of Korean culture.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how traditional Korean masks were made, and learn folk dances as well. Most will work up quite the appetite from all the exciting activities, so there will be a variety of food trucks present on site. On the last day of the festival, an exciting parade will march through the Gwanghwamun Plaza, with live traditional music and dance performances.
Special highlights include a tug-of-war contest, in which 5000 people will be tugging and pulling in the heart of downtown Seoul. Naturally, amongst all of the singing and dancing, there will be a National Arirang Singing Contest.
Sing along with the crowd, “Arirang, arirang, arariyo”, amidst the beautiful hanboks and join us for the Seoul Arirang Festival 2016!
Gyeongbokgung Palace The largest of the five grand palaces, the Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1395 in Seoul, and remains a city highlight and sight to see.
