About

Cheonggyecheon is an 11 km long modern stream that runs through downtown Seoul. Created as part of an urban renewal project, Cheonggyecheon is a restoration of the stream that was once there before during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). The stream was covered with an elevated highway after the Korean War (1950-1953), as part of the country's post-war economic development. Then in 2003, the elevated highway was removed to restore the stream to its present form today. The stream starts from Cheonggye Plaza, a popular cultural arts venue, and passes under a total of 22 bridges before flowing into the Hangang (River), with many attractions along its length.

Cheonggyecheon’s turbulent history is on display at the Cheonggyecheon Museum which opened in September 2005. The museum offers visitors the chance to learn about the many changes the stream has seen, including being buried underground and being restored. The story is told with the help of a scale-model and period photographs. Admission is free.

  • Beautiful in at daytime, very romantic at nighttime
My recommendation is to devote a good few hours to walk through it from the starting point (The big blue & red shell statue. IDK the name, it was all in Korean 😅)

  • Nice canal boulevard
It is a canal walkway below road level with running water in the middle. Pedestrians are evacuated when the water level upstream is too high and needs to be released into the canal thus flooding the...

  • Nice walk in the middle of busy CBD of Seoul
Took a walking tour along the Chonggyecheon Stream. A nice peaceful walk starting from Gwanghwamun and ended at Dondaemun. Near Dondaemun you can have some lunch at the traditional Gwangjang...

  • Nice place to relax
This stream is a nice place to relax and take a walk in Seoul. Can sometimes get crowded on the weekends, but it's a nice natural space in the middle of the city.

  • Relaxing but time to break out the pruners
Nice way to get from point A to B without the noise or stress of street traffic. I applaud the city for the effort undertaken to make this a nice place to walk but the landscaping/brush is now...
