Using the Subway in Seoul

Seoul's subway system operates continuously from approximately 5:30 AM until midnight. A distinctive color represents each subway line. All station signs are in Korean, English, and Chinese. You must use a transportation card or single-use ticket when boarding the subway.

  • Starting from October 7, 2023 (Saturday), there will be fare adjustments on the Seoul subway system.
  • Additional charges will apply when using the following routes: Airport Railroad Independent Area (Cheongna International City-Incheon International Airport), Sinbundang Line (Sinsa-Gwanggyo), Yongin EverLine (Giheung-Jeondae·・Everland) and Ui-Sinseol Light Rail Transit Line (Balgok-Napseok)
  • For distances between 10 and 50 kilometers: An additional 100 KRW for every 5 kilometers.
  • For distances exceeding 50 kilometers: An additional 100 KRW for every 8 kilometers.

4. Select the number of passengers and pay the fare
Boarding the Subway

1. When passing through the ticket gate, use your transportation card and await the reader’s approval.
2. For transfers, follow the signs leading to your desired line.
3. When you reach your destination, use your transportation card and await the reader’s approval at the exit gate.

TIP!
  • Disposable transportation cards can be purchased at the station's 'Disposable Card Issuing & Card Charging Machine.’
  • T-money transportation cards are available for purchase at convenience stores.
  • When transferring with a transportation card, transfers between buses and subways are free (additional charges may apply depending on the distance).
  • If you have used a disposable transportation card, you can return the card at the 'Deposit Refund Machine' inside the station where you disembarked and receive a refund of 500 won.
  • If the balance on your T-money or disposable transportation card is insufficient, you can use the fare adjustment machine near the ticket gate to add money.
