This building is located to the west of Geoncheonggung in Gyeongbokgung Palace. It housed about 40,000 books on Western artifacts purchased from the Qing Dynasty and was mainly used as King Gojong’s private library. Additionally, it served as a venue for enshrining portraits of kings or receiving foreign envoys. Originally constructed as a secondary building of Hamnyeongjeon Hall in Changdeokgung, it was relocated to Gyeongbokgung in 1891. The building was opened to the public in 2006, and the books previously housed there are now kept at Seoul National University's Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies and the Jangseogak Archives of the Academy of Korean Studies. In 2016, Jibokjae was transformed into a library and opened to the public. It is open from April to October, except for July and August, making it a great place to visit if you're in Gyeongbokgung during this period.
