Palpan-gil traces back to the Joseon dynasty. It was given this name because of how 8 government ministers or "pansuh" once made their home on this road. One can only say that they have truly lived in this neighborhood if it has been at least 30 or 40 years. Not only are there long-time residents in this area, but long-time customers or regulars of businesses in the area are a common sight as well. One butcher shop has secured a spot on this street since the 1940's and is known to be one of the longest going businesses in the area.
Palpan-gil is considered to be a part of the back streets of Samcheong-dong. It is comparatively quieter and less busy; one may even find it to be suitable as a short walking trail. On the west end of the street is a path that leads to Cheong Wa Dae (Office of the President), and on the other end is the Prime Minister's official residence. Because of these distinct characteristics, there is no store that exists just for the sake of taking up space. On this road is a fish restaurant whose regular customers include members of the National Congress, a tart business that has people visiting from all parts of the country, and a fresh milk bread bakery that is always swarming with people.
By 8 p.m., this area is completely dark. Since businesses here mainly serve people who work nearby at the Blue House or neighboring art galleries, for example, shops tend to close down once the work day is over. Even popular jazz clubs located on Palpan-gil close around 11 p.m. Stationed on either side of the street are security men whose stiff demeanor may intimidate you for a moment. However, you will realize that they are like any other nice person if you dare to ask them for directions. Another special part of this street are the benches and chairs that are put out in front of almost every store. It is meant to be a short but sweet rest stop for weary legs. The street is also home to beautifully painted murals and the store from the MBC drama, "Fated to Love You."
