“Curious about that red flavor, honey
It melts the more you bite, that strawberry taste”
by Red Velvet
This summer most definitely had a "red" flavor. The intense summer heat felt as if it’d melt everything in sight, but just like the strawberry flavor that burst in your mouth after a bite, Seoul’s summer has a sour, yet sweet aftertaste. Many exciting things like Hangang swimming pools, water sport, and campground were happening this summer! However, if you missed out on those things, that’s ok! There’s still time! You don’t even have to go far to enjoy what’s left of your summer break!
Although we’re technically approaching the start of autumn, temperatures continue to be above 36 °C, extending the summery weather. Like the wise old saying which advises against outdoor activities and recommends plenty of sleep and fluid intake, taking a well-deserved rest is definitely much more appealing than traveling around constantly sweaty under the sun. Let us show you how to take a real break.
1. Trending Hocance (aka Staycation)
Hotel X Vacance
Hocance is a new type of Korean word created from the trending culture of enjoying your vacation in a hotel. Hotels aren’t just for sleeping anymore. Complete with a pool, spa, and gym, they’re the perfect place to go for some leisure and fun. The fact that you’re sleeping in an unfamiliar place that’s not your home can bring about a sense of excitement and newness into your life. There’s no need to travel far. Instead, take a hocance (staycation) at one of Seoul’s hotels.
Seoul Dragon City
As Seoul’s first lifestyle “hotel-plex” to open up in 2017, Seoul Dragon City is a 40-floor building with three towers designed to embody the shape of a dragon. This complex holds many facilities including a hotel, cultural spaces, and restaurants. But its most popular facility is the Sky Kingdom swimming pool located on the 34th floor!
Surrounded by Achasan Mountain and Hangang River, Walkerhill is known for its spectacular views. As it offers various promotions throughout the season, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a late summer staycation. Only open for a limited time during the summer, its Riverpark Pool is a must visit place for trendsetters and hipsters looking to lounge and take memorable pictures. There’s also a separate pools for children, making this a perfect place for families as well.
Seoul is a fascinating city. Not only is it a place with cutting edge technology, it’s also a place lush with forest and nature. A temple, which you’d think would be located deep within the mountains, can be easily found right smack in the center of the city. Popular among both Koreans and foreign visitors alike, temple stay is a unique cultural program which lets you experience the life of Buddhist monks at traditional temples with over 1,700 years of Buddhist history. It’s the perfect way to escape the daily grind while searching for some inner peace.
Bongeunsa Temple
Located across Samseong Station, Bongeunsa Temple is one of Seoul’s main Buddhist temples with over 1,000 years of history. There are many different kinds of programs available for its temple stay. Visitors can drink tea in a tea room, learn tea ceremony, explore the temple, meditate with the monks, and more by signing up and reserving spots in the program.
531 Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam-gu, Seoul +82-2-3218-4800
Jogyesa Temple
Located in the middle of Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is open to the public 24/7, allowing people from all walks of life to freely come and rest within its grounds regardless of their backgrounds, nationalities, or religion. A variety of programs - including a 2 night 1 day temple stay, 1 day temple stay, night temple stay, Chamseon (Zen, meditation explanation) - and more, are available for reservation.
With the opening of traditional Korean houses called hanok to the public, modern visitors can see and experience the life of Koreans back in the Joseon dynasty. The traditional and peaceful architecture of the hanok lends visitors an illusion of having traveled back in time to the past. Most hanok stay programs use or expand already existing hanok houses. And because most of the hanok were actual houses built by people in the past, they are conveniently located near many major attractions.
Rakkojae
Meaning “a place where one can enjoy the traditions of times past and rest one’s soul", Rakkojae Seoul is a Korean hanok hotel with 130 years of history. Renovated from a former aristocrat’s house, Rakkojae provides cultural programs like tea ceremonies and kimchi making experience.
Built in 1930, this two-story hanok features a unique combination of Eastern and Western architecture. It even comes with a small outdoor terrace. But more than anything, the real allure of this place lies in the Pansori performances held on its grounds twice every year, allowing visitors to happen upon a unique kind of experience.
A real vacation is where you get to rest while enjoying yourself.
Don’t unnecessarily tire yourself out by traveling far. Instead, look for something closer to fill up the last days of your summer break. Like the song, you’ll be sure to find that "sweet red flavor" only in Seoul!
