In Korea, a place with four distinct seasons, the hot weather has returned again this August after a long rainy season. Last summer, Korea's heat wave surpassed 40°C and was similar to that of Southeast Asia’s climate. When will this heat spell end? Through the KMA's data, let's see the weather for the third week of August when the summer heat will be in full swing. A temperature of 30 °C is expected to continue throughout this week, with the highest temperature exceeding 33°C. Meanwhile, the temperature is expected to drop as low as 24 °C after the sun sets. In August, it’s usual for Seoul to experience a prolonged heat wave. Ever wonder what causes a heat wave? A heat wave occurs when the warm air created by atmospheric pressure changes is trapped in an area. It is a natural phenomenon. However, the intensity and frequency of heat waves are constantly increasing managing to reach 40°C last summer. We cannot pinpoint the exact cause of heat waves but global warming is certainly a cause for this extreme condition. Heat wave warnings are issued when there is a risk of a disasters due to a heat wave. Heat wave advisories and warnings belong to the comprehensive heat wave alert category. Heat wave advisories and warnings are issued when daytime highs are predicted to exceed 33℃ and 35℃, respectively, for at least two days. Please take note of this when planning your trip to Seoul so that you can protect yourselves when you receive a text message or hear news related to a heat wave.
When a heat wave alert is issued, it is best to refrain from outdoor activities as much as possible. One thing you should be particularly careful about is "heat-related illnesses." Heat-related illnesses are caused by excessive outdoor activities during hot weather and, in some severe cases, can also lead to deaths if not treated in a timely manner! What are the symptoms of heat-related illnesses? If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, and headache during outdoor activities, you can suspect a heat-related illness. As soon as you notice such symptoms, you should immediately cool down your body by taking off your clothes, fanning yourself to supply cool air, spraying yourself with water, or place ice packs on your body in areas with large arteries.
