Shining Gangbuk-gu
To Gangbuk-gu, a place shining with history and culture.
The streets are filled with colors of red, yellow, and orange leaves. Dyed in the colors of autumn, there are many beautiful places in Seoul this fall. But to truly enjoy this autumn season, visitors must take a visit to Gangbuk-gu’s lush areas brimming with both historical and culture significance. K-drama “Mr. Sunshine”, modern history, fall foliages, nature hike – Seemingly unrelated at first glance, these key words come together to offer visitors a peek of the great many charms of Gangbuk-gu. Let’s start our journey into shining Gangbuk-gu.
It’s a place to glimpse into the lives of historical figures like like Go Ae-shin, Eugene Choi, Goo Dong-mae, Kim Hee-sung, and Kudo Hina – Korean patriots that were portrayed through characters on the popular Korean drama “Mr. Sunshine”. Learning about freedom, equality, and democracy, the main values which make up the Korean Constitution, visitors can come to see how the future of Korea envisioned by those historical figures came to be.

On the way to April 19th National Cemetery, the yellow-colored leaves of the gingko trees sway gently in the wind. A memorial ground and resting place of those who lost their lives during the April 19th Revolution, a memorial tower and memorial hall was erected nearby to commemorate the Korean patriots.
Although it’s a memorial ground and a place of reverence and solemnity, there are many happy, smiling families who make their visits here not only to pay their respects, but to also take in the beauty of fall foliage that surround this special place.
Let’s walk along a portion of the many trails running throughout Bukhansan Mountain. It’s a place to shed off the stress of city life and breathe in the healing aura of the forest. A place in close proximity of Modern History Memorial Hall and April 19th National Cemetery, the entrance to this trail is only a 10-minute walk away from Modern History Memorial Hall. Walking along the dirt trails of the forest, it’s easy to lose yourself in the peaceful atmosphere of nature’s wilderness.
Gangbuk-gu is full of greenery. Dream Forest is the fourth biggest park in Seoul after Olympic Park, World Cup Park, and Seoul Forest. Facilities like performance halls, galleries, restaurant, observatory tower, and cafes are available throughout the park. On the weekends, visitors can easily spot children running, families playing badminton, and people propping up tents to rest leisurely on the grass field throughout the park.
