As in a sculpture park, how about strolling through the art gallery?
The shape of touch started from a desire to share the fun and the value of work derived from using the hands and the body to make art in the era where all materials are digitalized. This exhibition represents how materials in our surroundings are shaped into forms, all crafted by the skilled handiwork of the artist.
Artist Lee Eun-woo starts her day by heading to her studio for work. The artist sets a one-hour timer and engages in her 'drawing' without a specific purpose, simply allowing her hand to create whatever it desires. It's a repetitive habit that resembles a daily routine. Various shapes combine and accumulate by connecting dots with lines, forming interesting patterns. The finished work is transferred onto grid paper and complemented with textures and colors that suit the shapes.
The entire space of the Children's Gallery has been structured using a square grid. For the artist, the grid serves as a crucial tool for quantifying the size of objects and is the fundamental framework for her drawings. The drawing results that have become part of a regular daily routine are visualized in various ways in a grid-standardized exhibition space. Lines and shapes in a drawing may go beyond the ground and become three-dimensional as a sculpture or may be enlarged into an architectural form and pass through the structure.
Large and small sculptures throughout the exhibition hall are made from various materials around us. The artist has molded her sculptural world by spending a long time cutting and shaping materials by hand, harmonizing them with everyday objects. The sculptures' visuals reminiscent of furniture and toys, can evoke one’s favorite object.
Could there be significance in doing something 'just because' without a specific purpose? The Shape of Touch results from accumulating simple and repetitive acts of 'drawing' and 'creating' over a long period. The hope is that this exhibition serves as an opportunity to contemplate the value of the immersive experience and the sense of peace that comes from the ordinary labor of starting a day well and finding inner tranquility.
