Ice Skating at Seoul Plaza
Has it hit you that only one month remains in the year 2015? There is the bittersweet feeling of saying goodbye to one year and welcoming in another with much expectation. When life gets in the way, it's hard to meet up with friends and family. As the year comes to a close, we suggest some places where you can end it with a bang with some of your most loved ones. Seoul Square holds all sorts of events such as the Seoul Kimchi Festival, Chrysanthemum exhibition, and a diversity of others. During the wintertime, Seoul Square also transforms into a huge ice skating rink. First beginning in 2004, this upcoming year marks the 10th anniversary of the ice rink. Because Seoul Square is located in the midst of magnificently tall buildings, it is an extremely romantic place to skate and has been visited by more than 200,000 people last year. The ice rink will be open from December 17 - February 9 and is comparatively cheap in price. Don't worry about hurting your bum and let yourself go to the atmosphere!
Directions : Exit 4 or 5 of City Hall station (line 1 or 2) or exit 5 of Gwanghwamun Station (line 5).
TIP
- The skate rental fee is included in the overall entrance fee. However, a separate fee of 500 won gloves must be paid in order to enter the rink.
- Because the ice rink can suddenly close depending on weather conditions, there are two options available to customers. They can either receive a full refund or enter the rink another day without a prior reservation.
Dongdaemun Design Plaza
The Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) was designed by Zara Hadid, a world-reknown architect originally from Iraq. Opening in 2014, DDP is divided into the following 5 sections: the Art hall, museum, design shop, Oullim Square, and the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. Resembling a futuristic city, this building is more splendid at night than it is in the day. The lights of the neighboring Dongdaemun fashion town reflect against the futuristic architecture, lighting the path of passing pedestrians. And sprawled out next to the Lee Kan Soo Exhibition Hall are 25,550 beautiful LED roses- a perfect spot for an end of the year romantic getaway within the city. The reason for this particular number of 25,550 roses comes from the simple calculation of 365 x 70. One rose represents each day that Korea has experienced living in complete liberation. The idea is to celebrate Korea's 70th anniversary of liberation for one whole year, festival-style. Each individual rose has its beauty, but the collective impact of 25,550 lit up roses makes you feel like you're in a dream. Even without a professional camera, photos can't help but to turn out well.
- At DDP, check out a diversity of other exhibitions ( Alessandro Mendini, Kansong Munhwa Exhibition Part 5: Flowers and Feathers). Please check the website in advance.
Even if its not a special day, there are plenty of fun things to do at Sinchon. With the Christmas season soon approaching, Sinchon will be holding a Christmas Street Festival. Spending a quiet Christmas with your family at home is always nice, but how about an exciting and spirited Christmas in the streets of Sinchon? Last year, the Sinchon Christmas Street festival took place on the entire street of Yonsei-ro with Christmas-related items on sale, a silent disco, a Sinchon Santa village, fun rides for kids, a photozone, special events, a kidzone, and much more. It is a festival smack dab in the middle of the city that has something for everyone. This year, the festival is planning to upgrade to better and bigger events. If you want to spend Christmas in a meaningful and special way, make your way to Sinchon this December! Another fun festival that you can look forward to is the Christmas Market at Seongbokchon Fountain Square. From December 5-6, learn how the Germans first celebrated Christmas. There are opportunities to experience their specific Christmas culture. You can also try the foods that each European country eats during Christmas. Booths will be set up to sell a variety of goods as well as caroling, hand bell, and flamingo dancing performances. Get in the spirit before Christmas even starts!
Directions : Exit 2 or 3 of Sinchon station (Sinchon Christmas Festival), Exit 2 of Hansung Univ. station (Seongbokgu European Christmas Market).
