Bamseom is an island located downstream from Mapodaegyo Bridge on the Hangang River, intersected by Seogangdaegyo Bridge. Known as a habitat for migratory birds, Bamseom gets its name from its chestnut-like shape. In the past, the island was inhabited. Still, during the development of Yeouido, the island was split into Upper Bamseom and Lower Bamseom after an explosion forced residents to relocate to Mapo-gu. The upper part of Bamseom, with its bay-shaped shoreline, became an important bird nesting area. Over the next 20 years, sediment from the Hangang River allowed trees and grasses to flourish, attracting birds and establishing the island as a well-known urban bird sanctuary. Bamseom Island is now approximately six times larger than it was originally. In 1999, it was designated as a Natural Ecosystem Conservation Area; in 2012, it was recognized as a Ramsar Wetland. While direct access to the island is prohibited, Bamseom Island can be viewed from Bamseom Park.
