“I take with me a piece of happiness.” These were the words of Bernard Leach, one of the three great contemporary potters from the U.K., who visited Korea in 1935 and took with him the moon jar. The moon jar survived World War II and was left in the hands of his student, Lucie Rie, and is currently on display at the British Museum. The pure white porcelain jars with its globular body evoke images of a full moon, reflecting the beauty and emotions of Korea. The piece continue to deeply inspire visitors from all over the world today. British author, Alain de Botton, spoke of the moon jar in his book Art as Therapy, “In addition to this jar being a useful tool, it is a piece of work that manifests the ideal of modesty.”
Accordingly, Korean pottery carries a subtle presence with an elegance that minimizes techniques and creates a peaceful balance with its surroundings at the same time . The pottery harmonizes elegantly with the lifestyles of modern people who pursue a minimalistic lifestyle and value-centered consumption. There is a workshop and gallery in Seoul where people can experience the beauty of traditional Korean pottery without having to visit famous pottery destinations outside the metropolitan area. We’d like to introduce a place in Jongno-gu, the center of Seoul travels and home of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hanok Village, and Insa-dong, that offers a private pottery experience.

ONDO Studio

Located in a hanok, a traditional Korean house, in Bukchon, “ONDO Studio” is a Korean-style ceramics studio that is often used as a filming site for various photoshoots including the Seoul Metropolitan City tourism video filmed with BTS. Living up to its slogan “Ceramics for Living,” the studio is a space where lifestyles as genuine as the hanok are being created. Pottery made at the studio can be purchased, but we recommend that visitors take part in the small-scale ceramics class where they can make their own traditional Korean ceramics.
At the two-hour, one-day class, participants can choose two pieces of work from everyday pottery and objects, such as plates, bowls, cups, and vases. The detailed one-on-one class is led by representative Yang Hyun-suk, who received the Grand Prize at the “2019 Gyeonggi Ceramic Tableware Competition.” Yang’s plates, which display an unadorned beauty of blank spaces and lines, become a part of spaces as objects that are both practical and ornamental. “The heart of the individual is encompassed in objects made with the hands to create special charms that cannot be felt in industrial products.” Just like the words of Yang, personalized traditional Korean pottery that incorporates the hearts of individuals can be made during this serene, two-hour private pottery class.

The KCDF Gallery, located in Insadong, the heart of tradition in Seoul, is a place where tradition and modernity coexist, offering exhibits of Korean handicrafts year-round. As an exclusive exhibition space of crafts and designs managed by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation, the venue features a library on the bottom floor that is furnished with craft-related books and data. The Gallery Shop is located on the first floor, and exhibition spaces are on the second and third floors. Works by various artists can be purchased at the Gallery Shop, among which nearly half of the displayed works are ceramic works. General goods made with traditional techniques by young artists such as inlaid mugs, mother-of-pearl tumblers, ceramic pendants, and drip coffee sets made with buncheong and white porcelain, which catch the eyes of visitors. Numerous handicrafts completed with artistic value and functionality that acquired the “K-Craft” mark, which is the designation of excellent handicrafts, can be seen at the Gallery, and items like the moon jar in its old, original shape can be reserved and purchased online for pick-up at the Gallery. Visitors can pay a visit to attractions such as high-quality galleries, antique shops, and Korean dessert cafes in the vicinity.

Read before Reservation

- Reservation for the next month is available after 15th of the previous month.
- Reservation may be closed early during weekend, holiday, and peak season in spring and fall.
- Seoul Guided Walking Tour Office and Seoul culture and tourism guide are not liable for the safety accidents during the Seoul Guided Walking Tour.
- Reservation for unaccompanied tourist under 14 will be canceled on site.
- All reservations are canceled when Seoul Guided Walking Tour is unavailable due to Particulate Matter Reduction Measure or other weather conditions (heat wave, typhoon, heavy rain). (As of the date before the tour day)
Read before Reservation

- The course is for tourists with mobility problems (Senior, people with disability, stroller user).
- You may not use the course without an assistant (or companion)
