Rhythmic Traditions
Sandra Meynier has made something of a name for herself in the designer community here in Seoul. Her story extends all the way back to 2008 when she settled in South Korea’s capital as a fashion commercial agent and began working with several notable designer brands after graduating from Atelier Chardon Savard.
Yet, despite having since set up a successful business, Korea initially wasn’t even on her radar to begin with. It was a spontaneous summer trip to Seoul more than a decade ago that really sparked her interest. Her friend had invited Sandra to the city to visit and partake in sports training. After following someone holding seamstress attires to the textile market did she become truly enchanted and decided that it was here that she would set up shop and pursue her passion.
“To be honest, Korea wasn't something I had ever dreamt about before coming,” she noted. “Truth be told, I didn't even have a clear idea of its location on the map. I vividly recall being greeted with the distinct aroma when I first arrived at Incheon Airport—warm and filled with the promise of exciting discoveries. It was the most exotic scent I had ever encountered, marking the beginning of a memorable journey.”
Throughout her studies at Atelier Chardon Savard, Meynier was in the company of Korean creative artists.
“There were only a few Koreans in my fashion design school, Atelier Chardon Savard, and I found their sense of style and energy quite enjoyable. This sparked my curiosity about what Korea would be like.”
Sandra notes that Seoul continues to evolve at such a rapid clip, and recounts how much the city was brimming with energy and possibility a decade ago.

“I used to have an office in Garosugil back in 2013-2014, during what felt like the golden age of Sinsa-dong,” she says. “It was a delightful period, and Garosugil was a place where I could find inspiration and enjoy delicious coffees — my favorite being Laybrick Coffee. I used to go shopping and have brunch there on the weekends.”
It’s easy to grow accustomed to certain places of interest. Yet, Seoul has never been a city to rest on its laurels, and its inhabitants are forever pursuing new challenges and inspirations, continually changing the face of some popular districts to cater to evolving tastes.
“It's interesting how, in Korea, you don't often get the chance to form a long-lasting attachment to a place,” Meynier reflects. “Many of the places I loved have disappeared. It's a unique aspect of Korean culture, contrasting with the French experience where a beloved coffee shop or restaurant can endure for decades. In Korea, it's a different dynamic, and as a French person, this was a novel and intriguing aspect of the local culture.”
These days Meynier spends most of her time at a rhythmic gymnastics center in Hannam-dong, where she trains four times a week. Her routine revolves around Itaewon, Hannam-dong, while her business operations are carried out at heroffice in Jangchung-dong, next to Dongdaemun.
“I particularly enjoy the international vibe of Hannam-dong, characterized by a unique taste for quiet luxury,” Meynier says. “Itaewon, on the other hand, is my go-to place for vegan food. Occasionally, I also head to Itaewon for a night out with friends, exploring its vibrant and chaotic atmosphere in bars and clubs. I enjoy observing the diverse crowds in various locations.”
As a newcomer, Meynier finds it enriching delving into the culture, and recommends exploring places like Gyeongbokgung and its beautiful garden, Bukchon, the MOMA, and the Korean National Museum for visitors. She also feels that Insa-dong offers a unique vintage experience, while Hongdae and Sinchon provide a glimpse into the vibrant youth culture. Yeonnam-dong and Mangwon are perfect for enjoying coffee, strolling with friends, and indulging in afternoon shopping.
“There are so many things to explore and enjoy in Seoul. I believe Seoul is more about the unique experiences it offers than just being ecstatic about its architecture.”

Read before Reservation
- Reservation shall be made at least 3 days before the tour day.
- Reservation for the next month is available after 15th of the previous month.
- Reservation may be closed early during weekend, holiday, and peak season in spring and fall.
- Seoul Guided Walking Tour Office and Seoul culture and tourism guide are not liable for the safety accidents during the Seoul Guided Walking Tour.
- Reservation for unaccompanied tourist under 14 will be canceled on site.
- All reservations are canceled when Seoul Guided Walking Tour is unavailable due to Particulate Matter Reduction Measure or other weather conditions (heat wave, typhoon, heavy rain). (As of the date before the tour day)
