The name ‘Jamsil’ originated from the establishment of the ‘Jamsildohoe’ during the reign of King Sejong in the Joseon Dynasty to promote silk farming. Up until 50 years ago, Jamsil was an island in the middle of the Han River. However, in 1971, the Songpa River was filled in as part of the Han River development project, and with the construction of apartments and a sports complex, Jamsil as we know it today was formed.
Samjeondo Monument
This monument was erected in 1639 (the 17th year of King Injo's reign) after the Joseon Dynasty was defeated by the Qing Dynasty in the Manchu Invasion of 1636 and was forced into signing a humiliating peace treaty. King Injo suffered tremendous humiliation as he was compelled to kneel three times and bow his head nine times in submission at Samjeondo dock, where the monument now stands.
Seokchon Lake (West Lake)
The area where Seokchon Lake currently lies was once a key route for waterway traffic as it was part of the main course of the Han River where Songpanaru Dock was located. After the island was reclaimed during the Han River reclamation project in the 1970s, the remaining waterway became what is now known as Seokchon Lake. The existence of the river is evidenced by the Samjeondo Monument.
Bangi-dong Food Alley
The Bangi-dong Food Alley, more popularly known as Bangimatgol is the representative food street in the Jamsil Tourist Special Zone, drawing crowds of office workers at lunchtime. Nearby, you can also find "Songnidan-gil," a street lined with trendy and modern shops. It is worth noting the interesting contrast between these two bustling commercial districts.
Hanseong Baekje Station
Located on Subway Line 9, Hanseong Baekje Station is named after Hanam Wiryeseong, the first capital of the Baekje Kingdom. It is connected underground to the SOMA Museum of Art. "SOMA" is the acronym for the Seoul Olympic Museum of Arts and also carries the meaning of "body and physical" in Greek. Moreover, it was designed as a commemorative space for the Seoul Olympics.
Olympic Park Entrance
Constructed for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, this vast park boasts over 430,000 pyeong in size or approximately half the size of Yeouido. Today, many of the Olympic venues are used as concert halls, making it a global hub for K-pop.
Mongchon Lake
The Mongchon Lake is an artificial lake, constructed as a moat around Mongchon Toseong to protect it from enemy invasions during the Baekje period. The lake is estimated to have been built between the late 3rd and early 4th centuries, boasting a long history of over 1,700 years.
Olympic Sculpture Park
This park was created to commemorate the 1988 Seoul Olympics and features 201 sculptures created by 155 artists from 66 countries around the world. It is considered one of the five greatest sculpture parks in the world, making it an international attraction.
Seongnae Stream (Oryun Bridge)
The trail along Seongnae Stream, which flows into the Han River, offers a picturesque walking route and the chance to observe various migratory birds throughout the seasons. In 2005, an ecological stream restoration project introduced water from the Han River and the subway groundwater, transforming the area into a vibrant ecosystem where fish, birds, and insects thrive.
Olympic Plaza
The Olympic Plaza, with its distinctive radial arcade of shopping buildings that surround the square, served as the Athletes' Village during the Seoul Olympics. After the games, the Olympic Village and Media Village which were centered around the Olympic Plaza were repurposed and developed into large-scale residential zones.
