On view from August 9 to November 10, Space K Seoul is pleased to present "Yellow Sea", a solo exhibition of works by Kylie Manning. Informed by coastal experiences from her upbringing in Alaska and Mexico, the works combine seascapes and ambiguous figures, moving between moments of clarity and abstraction. In a technique employed by Dutch Baroque painters, the artist builds up layers of thin paint, refracting light through the oils in each layer to create a self-luminous effect. The result is a lush harmony of radiant textures and delicate colors. This exhibition features the artist’s most ambitious project to date, submerging viewers in the rippling compositions of a new installation created specifically for Space K. Three large paintings on silk scrim will cascade through the exhibition space like film strips of the surrounding compositions. Measuring nearly 7 meters wide, three silk scrims by Manning are suspended in the center of the exhibition space, creating a stage-like effect. Each scrim is divided into five individual strips, acting as live gridded capsules. This allows the audience to traverse the oscillating vistas of Manning’s work alongside her represented figures. Manning draws inspiration from the tides of the ‘Yellow Sea’ that joins China and the Korean peninsula, meditating on ‘what is distilled after a tide removes excess debris, noise, and marks’. This exhibition will be an exciting opportunity to immerse visitors in the majestic seascapes alchemized by ‘Kylie Manning'.
